San Jose Fire Station No. 1
San Jose, CA
This joint effort of the Departments of Public Works, Redevelopment Agency and Fire Department utilized an extensive public review process. The facility features three double-deep bays, a hose tower, separate decontamination and gear rooms, dorms, landscaped interior courtyard, and a public conference room. The building was designed to be both passively and actively energy-efficient. Perforated metal fins articulate the operable windows on both stories and provide shading to deflect solar heat. Open windows catch cross-breezes that cool the interior. European-style hydronic radiators along the perimeter add warmth when needed, and ceiling-mounted bullet fans in every room help circulate the air.
Fire Station No. 1 received an AIA Honor Award for its innovative energy efficient design.
