The US Forest Service selects Shah Kawasaki to design the Schulman Grove Visitor Center
Shah Kawasaki Architects is providing programming and design services for the 2,100 sf visitor center at Schulman Grove that will act as a centralized point of interpretation for the Ancient Bristlecone Forest. The new visitor center will not only compliment the natural environment, but will achieve LEED Silver certification.

Nicole has a strong background in marketing for architecture firms and will support Shah Kawasaki Architects’ growth in civic, institutional, healthcare, and higher education markets. Prior to joining SKA, Collins was a marketing manager for the Oakland office of Perkins Eastman, an international design and architecture firm.
Clark Design/Build has been awarded the $431 Million Highland Hospital Acute Tower Replacement project
Shah Kawasaki Architects is pleased to announce that the Clark Design/Build has been awarded the $431 Million Highland Hospital Acute Tower Replacement project by the County of Alameda.
The team, led by Clark, includes SmithGroup as the lead architect and Ratcliff and SKA as associate architects. The $430.8 Million contract includes construction of replacement facilities that will be completed in three phases over seven years, making it the largest healthcare investment in the history of Alameda County.
The City of Tracy selects Shah Kawasaki Architects to design a new prototype Fire Station
The City of Tracy selects Shah Kawasaki Architects to design a new prototype Fire Station that can be constructed at two sites within the City of Tracy, and can be replicated at other locations in the future.
The program includes a pass-through bay that can accommodate three apparatus, living quarters for four personnel, and an exercise room.

Fire Station #18, designed by Shah Kawasaki Architects, breaks ground in Oakland. The new 2-story fire station is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification by employing sustainable strategies such as 100% natural ventilation in place of air conditioning and solar hot water panels to meet the station’s hot water demands. Fire Station #18 will accommodate three shifts of up to eight fire fighters and two ride-along students and is designed to allow drive-thru of the apparatus.

Shah Kawasaki Architects was selected by the city of Richmond to design the new Fire Station 66 that will replace the existing station on the same site. The fire station is being designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification and will include a “tot lot” to the east of the station will teach fire safety to local children through playtime activities.

West Millard Museums and Community Center selects Shah Kawasaki Architects to design a museum complex that will include: the Great Basin Museum focused on local history; the Topaz Museum, tracing the history of Japanese Americans in the WWII internment camp; Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum; and the Delta City Convention Center.

Goodwill Store’s Sales Jump 53% Following Remodel by Shah Kawasaki Architects
Shah Kawasaki Architects assisted Goodwill Industries in their mission to utilize purposeful design to increase revenues through the remodel of their retail store at 6624 San Pablo Avenue in Oakland, California.
SKA created a bold facade that stands out along the busy thoroughfare. The facade’s vibrant colors, bright signage and visible overhangs now draw in new customers who increased this location’s sales by 53% within the first four weeks of the store’s grand reopening.
Our very own Jigna Desai was just featured in ARCHnews, the newsletter of the East Bay Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Jigna has lent her artistic and design skills to SKA projects such as the Alameda County Sheriff's Regional Training Center, Latino Cultural and Performing Arts Center, and the ISKCON Temple of New Jersey.
SKA is proud to announce that Todd Friedlander has been promoted to Associate. An Architect with the firm since 2003, Todd has worked on some of the firm's most challenging projects and is currently working on Oakland's Studio One Arts Center and the Latino Cultural and Performing Arts Center.
Our team was excited to attend the grand opening party celebrating the new sobering center/detoxification facility. The facility provides a safe haven where chronic inebriates can recover from the effects of intoxication. Once sober, clients are offered an opportunity to receive further treatment in an adjacent facility that houses a comprehensive drug and alcohol intervention program. Our firm is drawn to such commendable projects and clients and looks forward to working on similar facilities in the future.
After 2 ½ years of design and construction, the Contra Costa County Public Works Department’s new office building and childcare center have finally opened! At 12,000 sf, this addition will alleviate overcrowding within the Public Works Department and provide daycare facilities and outdoor play yards for employees’ infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

Shah Kawasaki Architects is again honored to be published in Architectural Record. The work we did with Maki & Associates on the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Art at Washington University in St. Louis has received incredible praise from numerous sources, and we look forward to the upcoming opening of our current project on WashU's campus, the renovation of Steinberg Hall.
Shah Kawasaki Architects has always enjoyed working on projects stemming from our on-call contracts. These contracts allow us to stay in touch with our current clients while getting to know our newer ones. In the past year, we have signed new agreements with Contra Costa County, the City of Oakland, Alameda County, the Port of Oakland and UC Berkeley, and our team looks forward to working with each agency throughout the next few years.

Alan Kawasaki was invited to speak at the California Association of Museums' annual Director's Luncheon. This year's topic, Culturally Sensitive Design and Diverse Museum Audiences, provided an active discussion among the panel and the museum Directors who attended. We would like to thank Bill Moreno, the Claremont Museum of Art's new Executive Director, for moderating the presentation.
SKA is one of three firms shortlisted who have been invited to participate in this design competition for the 7,000 sf LEED Silver CSU Chico Northern California Natural History Museum.
Five years after we started working on Washington University’s Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts, Alan finally took his last flight to St. Louis, Missouri. Our team attended the grand opening of the new buildings that contain the college of architecture, graduate school of architecture & urban design, college of art, graduate school of art, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, the Kenneth and Nancy Kranzberg Art & Architecture Library, the department of art history & archaeology in arts & sciences, the Newman Money Museum, and the Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Studio for the Illustrated Book.

SKA is honored to be one of three firms shortlisted as executive architect for the new UC Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive building to be designed by Toyo Ito & Associates.
Our team was selected to create a master plan for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Regional Training Center in Dublin, California. The plan will rearrange components such as classrooms, simulators, offices, Emergency Vehicle Operators Courses, firing ranges, and the scenario village and incorporate new state-of-the-art training facilities.
The design team led by Harish Shah received a PG&E Savings by Design Team Award for their efforts to sustainably rehabilitate the City of Oakland’s Studio One Arts Center. The team, comprised of Shah Kawasaki Architects, SJ Engineers and F.W. Associates, was recognized at a luncheon for their exceptional efforts to integrate energy-efficiency and sustainable design into the renovation of this 100-year-old building.
Harish Shah and Alan Kawasaki presented What Administrators Need to Know Before Expanding, Renovating, or Constructing a Museum at the California Association of Museums’ annual conference in Monterey. Many thanks to the 60 museum directors and administrators who came to hear us!

We braved the storm and trekked into San Francisco for our 2005 holiday bash at Il Fornaio. What a great surprise to bump into our good friends from SJ Engineers at the restaurant! A good meal with family and friends proved to be what we all needed before heading back out into the rain and wind.

“We don’t believe in aesthetics for aesthetics’ sake. Everything here is purposeful.” The East Bay Business Times features Harish Shah with a full page article in its Entrepreneur section. Snighda Sen’s article follows Harish’s journey toward creating architecture with a purpose.
The San Francisco chapter of the AIA and UC Berkeley assembled a panel of local architects and their museum clients to discuss the trend of utilizing “starchitects” to design museum buildings in order to recreate a Bilbao effect in San Francisco. Harish Shah and The Mexican Museum’s Executive Director, Bill Moreno, participated in the discussion and outlined the unique relationship we have with Legorreta + Legorreta.

While designing the Customer Service Building at Oakland International Airport, Turner Construction, the project’s construction manager, approached SKA about forming a mentor-protege relationship with Colland Jang Architecture. For its October Terminal Improvement Project Construction Update, Turner interviewed Harish Shah and Colland Jang to find out how each viewed the relationship and what each firm learned from the pairing.

We held our first ever company picnic at the Moraga Valley Pool and Tennis Club in Orinda. Despite the fun we had barbecuing, playing volleyball and tennis, and swimming, it seems what we remember most is our unexpected visit from a local mountain lion!
We’re pleased to announce that Manan Shah has accepted our offer to join SKA as a Principal. A LEED-accredited design professional, Manan previously worked for Fox & Fowle Architects of New York. He will be working on the expansion of Contra Costa County’s Public Works building as well as heading the firm’s IT group.
